Winnie Ong took the money in 2012 and turned a bedroom hobby into Singapore’s Young Hungry Free, a brand now worn by K-pop star Jisoo on stage during Blackpink’s Singapore concert.

Market Impact

“It didn’t feel like a bold decision at the time,” Ong said. “I just wanted to give the idea a chance.”

The label began with vintage denim reworked on a second-hand DSLR and a single sewing machine. What started as a side project became a brand built around individuality—clothes that shift with the wearer’s mood and occasion rather than a fixed aesthetic.

Early customers in Singapore took time to accept the brand’s fluid style. Ong called the slow uptake a blessing.

“Trust isn’t built in a few launches,” she said. “It compounds over time.”

By 2024, Young Hungry Free was releasing smaller batches almost weekly, using quick reordering to test designs without overproducing. Customer feedback from TikTok LIVE, Instagram polls and in-person styling sessions shaped each new collection.

Behind every piece was a process that began in Singapore, then moved to long-term manufacturing partners in China—relationships Ong said took over a decade to build.

“They understand our quality standards,” she said. “I don’t think partnerships like that happen overnight.”

The label’s breakthrough came when Jisoo’s stylist selected a Young Hungry Free design without a formal collaboration. The piece appeared during Blackpink’s Singapore show in May 2025.

For Ong, the milestone was less about the exposure than the survival.

“Fashion is incredibly competitive,” she said. “The fact we’ve stayed independent and evolved for 14 years is what matters most.”

The label closed its only physical store in 2023, returning entirely to digital sales. Still, Ong said the brief retail experiment taught the team something online stores can miss: the value of face-to-face styling and real-time feedback.

Moving forward, Young Hungry Free plans more physical pop-ups and events alongside its weekly drops. Ong will focus on creative direction while a growing team handles operations.

“We’re not chasing volume,” she said. “We’re chasing resonance.”
