Tencent’s TenPay Global and ShopeePay Launch Cross-Border QR Payments in China
Market Impact
KUALA LUMPUR/SHENZHEN, Aug 21 (Reuters) – Tencent’s cross-border payment platform TenPay Global and ShopeePay on Thursday announced the launch of cross-border QR code payments in China, enabling seamless transactions for Southeast Asian travelers.
The service will initially be available to ShopeePay users from Singapore and Thailand, with plans to expand to Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines in subsequent phases. Users can scan and pay directly through the ShopeePay and Shopee apps at tens of millions of merchants that accept WeChat Pay QR codes.
ShopeePay, a digital payments and financial services provider operating across Southeast Asia and Brazil, said the initiative marks a milestone in building a more connected and inclusive digital payment ecosystem in the region.
“By bringing the familiar ShopeePay experience to users outside their home markets, we enable them to pay abroad as easily and comfortably as they do at home,” said Supphavit Hongamornsin, regional senior director of ShopeePay. “As travel and trade between Southeast Asia and China continue to grow, smoother cross-border payments can help users and businesses stay connected and unlock new opportunities.”
China’s role as host of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit this year has driven a rise in inbound tourism and international visitors, further boosting demand for convenient payment solutions.
Tencent has been actively contributing to the development of the Cross-Border Interconnection Payment Gateway, leveraging the platform to enhance payment services for foreign users via international digital wallets on WeChat Pay. As of now, Tencent has partnered with nearly 50 international digital wallets, including WeChat Pay HK, PayPal (United States), Hana Pay and Travel Wallet (South Korea), MoMo and ZaloPay (Vietnam).
More digital wallets from various APEC economies are accelerating their integration with the gateway. The service allows foreign visitors in China to pay by scanning WeChat Pay QR codes using their preferred digital wallets from their home countries, eliminating the need to change payment habits.
In parallel, WeChat Pay is rolling out new services for international card users. For the first time this year, users who link an international bank card to WeChat and complete their first transaction will receive a waiver on the 3% international card processing fee for 90 consecutive calendar days, capped at 1,000 yuan (1 yuan = 2,648 rupiah) per day.
WeChat Pay has also expanded in-app payment guides to 16 languages, including English, Korean, Thai, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic. Weixin Pay has set up service desks at major locations such as airports, entry points, hotels, and commercial hubs to assist international visitors from APEC economies with payment facilitation.
Details not yet available on the exact launch timeline for Malaysia or the specific number of merchants participating in the initial phase.
