Bursa Malaysia Ends Flat as Investors Await Corporate Earnings

Market Impact

KUALA LUMPUR — Bursa Malaysia ended marginally lower on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of key corporate earnings reports to gauge clearer market direction.

At the close of trading, the FBM KLCI slipped 0.15 point to 1,736.33, compared with last Friday’s close of 1,736.48. The benchmark index opened 1.83 points higher at 1,738.31 but fluctuated within a narrow range of 1,733.07 to 1,739.47 throughout the session.

On the broader market, decliners outnumbered advancers by 714 to 482, while 539 stocks remained unchanged. A total of 1,139 counters were untraded, and 46 were suspended. Trading turnover fell to 3.60 billion shares valued at RM3.03 billion, down from 3.91 billion shares worth RM3.32 billion last Friday.

Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng noted that the index continues to hold above the 1,730 level, indicating underlying support despite cautious sentiment. “We believe stronger earnings results from index heavyweights could provide the catalyst for the next upward move, while resilient domestic fundamentals should continue to cushion the downside,” he told Bernama.

Thong added that the FBM KLCI is expected to trade within the 1,725–1,745 range for the week, reflecting a balanced outlook amid mixed market signals.

Meanwhile, IPPFA Sdn Bhd director of investment strategy and country economist Mohd Sedek Jantan attributed the subdued trading environment to the upcoming public holiday in Malaysia. Bursa Malaysia will remain closed on Aug 25, 2026, in observance of Prophet Muhammad’s birthday.

Mohd Sedek also highlighted that investors are closely monitoring the Jackson Hole symposium, where US policymakers are expected to provide signals on the interest-rate outlook. The event, scheduled for later this week, is seen as a key event that could influence global market sentiment and capital flows.

The market’s flat performance reflects a wait-and-see approach as investors prioritize earnings updates and macroeconomic cues over speculative trading. With domestic economic resilience providing a buffer and external factors such as US monetary policy in focus, the near-term outlook remains cautiously optimistic within the established trading range.
