Raja Zarith Sofiah visits Irene Sofiya’s family, offers condolences and financial aid in Yong Peng

Market Impact

BATU PAHAT – The Raja Permaisuri Agong, Raja Zarith Sofiah, visited the family of Irene Sofiya Mohd. Khairool Faisal, 16, today in Kampung Selamat, Yong Peng, where she was visibly moved to tears during the emotional meeting.

The royal visit followed the discovery of the Form Four student’s body at a school in Yong Peng last Saturday, with authorities detaining a 16-year-old male classmate for six days under Section 302 of the Penal Code to aid investigations.

The visit underscores the national attention on Irene Sofiya’s death, which has prompted official inquiries and public concern over school safety. Raja Zarith Sofiah arrived at around 9 a.m. accompanied by Che’ Puan Mahkota Khaleeda Johor, the state’s crown princess, and led the gathering with a recitation of Surah Yasin and tahlil led by Batu Pahat district qadi, Mohd. Fauzi Bachok. She met Irene Sofiya’s father, Mohd.

Khairool Faisal Khyar, 42, her grandmother Jameyah Rabani, and other family members, offering personal financial assistance to ease their burden.

The meeting lasted nearly an hour, during which Raja Zarith Sofiah delivered words of encouragement and prayers for the family’s resilience amid their loss. Irene Sofiya was found unconscious with severe injuries at a school hall on Saturday evening before being pronounced dead. The case has drawn scrutiny after a male classmate, also 16, was remanded for six days under suspicion of involvement in the incident.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details of the investigation.
