Real wages in Germany rose 1.5% in the second quarter of 2026 from a year earlier as nominal wages climbed 4.1% while consumer prices increased 2.5%, Destatis said on Wednesday.

Market Impact

Sector-level gains were uneven. Nominal wages jumped 8.9% in agriculture, forestry and fishing; 7.6% in energy; and 7.5% in financial and insurance services. By contrast, the arts, entertainment and recreation sector saw a 3.4% rise, education 2.4%, and professional, scientific and technical services 1.8%.

Among full-time employees, the lowest-paid fifth saw nominal earnings rise 6.7%, the fastest increase of any quintile. Overall, full-time wages were up 3.9% year-on-year, below the national average of 4.1%, while the top fifth recorded a 3.3% rise. Apprentices’ pay climbed 6.0% and part-time workers’ earnings rose 4.7%.

The public administration, defence and social security sector remains excluded from the quarterly results because of structural changes that have compromised data reliability, Destatis said. Officials will publish alternative figures using the sector’s collective bargaining index until the issue is resolved.

The second-quarter wage data are available in Destatis’s GENESIS-Online database and on the Konjunktur dashboard, which provides monthly, quarterly and annual changes.
