For their feat, the three-man team of Renae Lee Szi Rui, Lim Zhen Xin and Gan Kien Sheng, all aged 18, bagged full scholarships from UCSI to enrol in any programme of their choice. And judging from their stellar performance in the final, their obvious pick would be STEM-related programmes. “This recognition has been a massive boost to my confidence, and I will continue this momentum into my future studies,” said Renae who scored straight As in 10 SPM subjects. Reflecting on the team's journey, Kien Sheng encouraged students not to be intimidated by STEM-related subjects. “STEM is not only for smart people, it’s for anyone who is willing to put in the effort and keep learning,” said Kien Sheng who intends to pursue medicine or pharmaceutical science. “I’ve always been interested in science, especially how the human body works and how medicine can help improve people’s lives. “Seeing how healthcare professionals are able to make a real difference in patients’ well-being really inspired me. “I would also like to keep learning and growing in the field so that I can serve the community better and possibly contribute to advancements in healthcare,” he said. The grand finale brought together 38 teams comprising 114 students from 25 schools nationwide, showcasing some of Malaysia’s brightest young STEM talents. Held under the theme STEM for Future Adventures: Empower, Innovate, Sustain!, this year’s competition attracted 1,947 students at the Zone Level Challenge. In second place, the team from Tsun Jin High School received RM45,000 in scholarships, while the third-placed team from Kuen Cheng High School was awarded RM30,000 in scholarships. UCSI University Student Affairs and Alumni deputy vice-chancellor Assoc Prof Dr Mabel Tan Hwee Joo said developing STEM talent is crucial to Malaysia’s future. “It is inspiring to be among the bright young minds from schools across Malaysia, gathered under one roof,” she said. “STEM education in the country is especially important today, now that our government is transitioning from a technology consumer to an AI and digital innovation producer. “As one of Asia's leading universities, classified among the world's top 1%, hosting this competition is a priority for us. “Ranked in Asia’s Top 30 and eighth in Southeast Asia, UCSI empowers students from over 120 nations as we’re committed to fostering future leaders.” The National Science and Maths Quiz 2026 was jointly organised by UCSI University Kuala Lumpur Campus, UCSI University Springhill Campus and UCSI College.
