Seat negotiations between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional for the Melaka state election will test the “Malay unity” both coalitions claim to uphold, an analyst warned. Umno and PAS—BN’s and PN’s Malay pillars—each have competing claims to Malay-majority seats, raising the risk of friction as they carve up the 28 constituencies.

Market Impact

Global Asia Consulting analyst Ahmad Zaharuddin Sani Ahmad Sabri said Umno will argue incumbency—its history and network in Melaka—while PAS can point to shifting Malay voting trends and stronger grassroots reach. “But both sides will resist giving up too many seats, and ultimately only one candidate can win,” he told FMT. “Unity on stage is easy; on the ballot box it’s harder.”

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said BN will defend the 21 seats it held after the last Melaka polls, while cooperation with PN—tested in Negeri Sembilan on Aug 1—will continue. Zahid did not disclose how many seats BN might cede to PN in Melaka’s 28 constituencies.

A second hurdle is vote transfer. Even if the coalitions agree on seats, PAS voters may not automatically back Umno candidates and vice versa, Zaharuddin said. “The Malay-majority seats will be the real battleground, where negotiations get thorny.”

Universiti Teknologi MARA’s A Aziz Azizam said both parties know Melaka is not their heartland. “The Umno-PAS alliance is a chance to win more seats,” he said, adding that the talks will reveal how far each side trusts the other to deliver votes.
