The Indonesian Trade Ministry said BYD Motor Indonesia had yet to provide a final cause for a 31 July vehicle incident after a follow-up meeting on consumer handling.

Market Impact

The clarification came at a 13 August gathering led by Director of Consumer Empowerment Immanuel Tarigan Sibero, who said the technical inspection of the vehicle was still under way. BYD’s Head of Public Relations and Government Relations Luther Panjaitan attended alongside company officials who outlined the incident timeline and customer support steps.

The ministry said the battery electric vehicle displayed abnormal behaviour on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road before the owner stopped outside it, contacted BYD’s call centre and was guided to safety. A Karawang dealer arrived on site, assisted evacuation and coordinated with the manufacturer. The customer received a replacement car on 8 August under a private settlement, while the technical probe continues.

Immanuel said a full examination was needed to determine root cause and inform preventive measures. “Rapid response to the consumer is critical,” he said. Separately, Director-General of Consumer Protection and Business Oversight Moga Simatupang urged strict adherence to consumer-protection rules and urged companies to strengthen complaint-handling systems.
