NILAI, Malaysia — Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), through its Ibnu Ummi Maktum Research Centre (UMMI), has expanded its Sign Language Quran expertise internationally by conducting a Level 1 Sign Language Quran Teaching Competency Course from Aug. 10 to 12, 2026.

The training, held at USIM’s IshaRI Lounge in Nilai alongside Brunei’s Ministry of Religious Affairs and Perusahaan Jari-Jariku Brunei, brought together 21 participants to enhance teachers' competencies in educating hearing-impaired students and those with special educational needs in Brunei.
The initiative highlights Malaysia's growing role as a regional centre for inclusive Islamic education, knowledge transfer, and specialized educational innovation. UMMI Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haji Norakyairee Mohd Raus stated that USIM is building an ecosystem connecting services, research, training, and innovation to support accessible Quranic learning.
Founder of Perusahaan Jari-Jariku Brunei, Dr. Hajah NorBayah Haji Shahman, noted that USIM was selected due to its institutional expertise in Quranic education and its development of the Quranic Hand Code (KTQ) system.
Throughout the three-day program, participants completed specialized training, group exercises, and competency assessments to improve their accuracy in using Quranic Hand Codes and visual signing techniques. A planned Level 2 course will focus on equipping teachers with innovative and inclusive instructional strategies, approaches, methods, and techniques. UMMI continues to offer tailored training programs to external agencies seeking specialized expertise in special education, Islamic education, and dakwah for persons with disabilities.
Looking ahead, USIM and Perusahaan Jari-Jariku Brunei finalized a Letter of Intent (LoI) on the closing day of the course to establish a broader framework for cooperation. The agreement encompasses joint initiatives in training, research, inclusive education, and community empowerment for the hearing-impaired. The partnership is expected to drive further joint development and expansion of Sign Language Quran innovations across national and international platforms.
