Malaysia can join the world’s top 30 economies by outpacing peers by at least two percentage points in annual nominal GDP growth, Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar said.

Market Impact

Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, chairman of Cypark Resources Bhd, IOI Corporation Bhd and Sunway Bhd, said Malaysia currently ranks 35th while the United Arab Emirates, in 30th place, has an economy about 20 per cent larger.

“To reach 30th or better we need to grow at least two percentage points faster than the rest in nominal terms,” Abdul Wahid told the Wisdom Malaysia Conference 2026 hosted by Kerjaya One PLT.

He said Malaysia’s real GDP grew about 5 per cent in the period while nominal GDP expanded roughly 7 per cent. Abdul Wahid warned the momentum must be sustained to reach the top-30 goal.

Achieving the target depends on policy measures that draw both foreign and domestic investment, he added.

The conference, running in Kuala Lumpur, brings together industry leaders for sessions on leadership, decision-making and transformation case studies.
