Telekom Malaysia Bhd said first-half earnings before interest and tax climbed 14.5% to RM1.26 billion as cost discipline offset revenue pressure, while the group raised its interim dividend 32% to 12.5 sen per share.

Market Impact

The state-backed telecoms operator reported operating revenue of RM5.74 billion for the six months to June 30, unchanged from the same period last year, as higher fixed-broadband and enterprise revenue were offset by softer international and mobile income.

Profit after tax and minority interests fell 8.6% to RM821.2 million because 2023 included a one-off tax credit, TM said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia on Monday.

Amar Huzaimi Md Deris, TM’s group chief executive, said the group’s Unifi UniVerse suite helped win customers and sustain growth despite a tough market.

“Our latest Unifi UniVerse continues to excite the market,” he said. “Its comprehensive suite of convergence offerings provides a seamless experience that meets the diverse needs of digital consumers.”

The interim dividend of 12.5 sen, worth RM479.7 million, compares with 9.5 sen paid for the first half of 2023.

Capital expenditure totalled RM460 million in the half, or 8% of revenue, and the group plans to accelerate investment in the second half to upgrade national and regional network infrastructure.

TM targets submarine cable systems, more data centres, and additional 4G and 5G backhaul sites to support demand from hyperscalers and cloud providers.

The group left its 2024 market guidance unchanged, expecting a full-year EBIT increase in line with first-half performance.

Unifi, TM’s consumer unit, added 1.2% to 3.143 million fixed-broadband subscribers in the half, helped by promotions and the launch of UniVerse, a bundled home-internet, mobile and entertainment package.

Unifi also rolled out the UNI5G WOW Prepaid plan offering unlimited 5G with uncapped speed and rewards, and a limited-time 200 GB 5G monthly add-on for RM1.

These moves earned Unifi awards including Best Fixed Business Service Provider and Best Home Broadband Service Provider at the PC.com 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards, Ookla’s Fastest Wi-Fi Provider in Malaysia, and Open Signal’s world-leading 5G download-speed title.

TM One, the enterprise arm, grew revenue 2.1% to RM1.41 billion despite a challenging business climate, aided by new labs for enterprise 5G and AI solutions and the launch of a cybersecurity simulation tool called Cybershield.

TM One also deployed a private 5G network at PETRONAS’s Bintulu LNG complex and is part of the Next Generation Emergency Services 999 initiative with government agencies.

The unit’s awards included Best Technology Solution Service Provider at the PC.com 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards.

TM Global, the wholesale and international arm, posted a 0.6% revenue rise to RM1.49 billion, driven by managed wavelength and domestic data services.

Its pipeline includes the Johor mega data centre with Singtel’s Nxera, expansions of the Klang Valley and Iskandar Puteri data centres, and more 4G/5G backhaul capacity to improve digital inclusion.

TM Global collected Telecom Company of the Year – Malaysia and Wholesale Company Initiative of the Year – Malaysia at the Asian Telecom Awards, plus the Best Operator in an Emerging Market award at the Carrier Community Global Awards.

Its CAMELIA platform, an AI-driven service-assurance system developed by TM Research & Development, won Most Innovative Digital Infrastructure Services Provider in Malaysia at the UK-based Global Business Outlook Awards.

Dr Sharlene Thiagarajah, CEO of TM R&D, said the award recognised the team’s work with TM group operations.

“Winning this award illustrates our commitment to develop AI and digital innovations with TM,” she said. “This recognition gives us the boost to explore more innovations.”
