Bursa Malaysia Rises on YTL, Banking Stocks; Analysts Cautious on Nvidia, Oil Risks

Market Impact

KUALA LUMPUR — Bursa Malaysia closed higher on Tuesday, mirroring gains across most Asian markets, as softer crude prices eased inflation concerns and lifted risk appetite. Buying interest centered on heavyweights in the utilities and banking sectors, including YTL Power International Bhd and Maybank Bhd, according to Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd.

Vice-president of equity research at Rakuten Trade, Thong Pak Leng, noted that while the market ended positively, investors remain cautious. He attributed the gains largely to a handful of index heavyweights, with broader participation still lacking strong momentum. Near-term sentiment, he said, will hinge on Nvidia Corp’s upcoming earnings release and developments in the Strait of Hormuz, where geopolitical tensions could reignite volatility in oil prices.

“Nevertheless, continued buying interest in banking heavyweights and resilient domestic fundamentals should provide some downside support,” Thong told Bernama. He expects the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to trade within the 1,735 to 1,755 range for the remainder of the week.

At the close, the FBM KLCI rose 12.21 points, or 0.70%, to 1,748.54 from Monday’s close of 1,736.33. The index opened 3.07 points higher at 1,739.40 and fluctuated between 1,735.70 and 1,753.22 throughout the session.
