Gardenia Bakeries (KL) Sdn Bhd donated over RM80,000 in bread products to university food banks across Malaysia to mark World Bread Day.

Market Impact

The aid supports the Food Bank Siswa programme run by Yayasan Food Bank Malaysia at four universities: Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Utara Malaysia. Each institution will receive a weekly delivery of fresh Gardenia bread for 40 weeks, benefiting about 1,000 students.

Hazlinah Harun, Gardenia’s general manager for marketing and public relations, said the donations reinforce the company’s commitment to providing quality food to young people. “Gardenia’s products are made fresh and delivered daily, 365 days a year,” she said. “Our track record shows we can deliver fresh bread consistently regardless of weather.”

The programme was launched at Universiti Malaysia Pahang on 16 October by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs. The Food Bank Siswa initiative was created after the ministry’s Food Bank Malaysia programme proved successful.

Gardenia also distributed 1,000 packs of Toast’em Butter Raisin and Delicia Raspberry bread at the launch and gave goody bags to 500 students registered with the UMP food bank.

The company has supported charitable causes for years, delivering free bread to more than 65 organisations including old folks homes, orphanages and centres for the disabled. Eight of those partners have received donations since 1991.

Gardenia began marking World Bread Day in 2018 with a campaign that donated 20,000 loaves to 20 homes for every one loaf purchased. This year’s focus shifted to university students facing financial hardship through the Food Bank Siswa programme.
