Malaysia Ramps Up Preparedness for Stronger El Niño, Potential Haze Threat

Preparations began in June following the first meeting of the 2026 National Haze and Dry Weather Committee on June 15, where federal and state agencies were briefed on the expected impacts of El Niño, including agricultural disruptions, declining water reservoir levels, and heightened risks of open burning and haze.

"Relevant parties and state governments were instructed to prepare measures under the National Haze Action Plan (PTJK) and National Open Burning Action Plan (PTPTK) if necessary," Kurup said in a statement on Sunday (Aug 16).

Regional Cooperation Urged to Curb Transboundary Haze

At the regional level, Malaysia has intensified efforts to collaborate with neighboring countries, particularly Indonesia, to prevent forest and land fires that could lead to cross-border haze. Kurup noted that bilateral discussions with Indonesia’s Minister of Environment had taken place, with both sides agreeing to enhance monitoring and joint efforts to curb hotspot escalation. "Malaysia and Indonesia have committed to intensifying efforts to overcome fires and haze conditions," he stated.

The government plans to submit an official letter to the ASEAN Secretariat, urging southern ASEAN nations to bolster preparedness against a strong El Niño, prevent transboundary haze, and mitigate its severity if it occurs. Alert Level 2 under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution was activated on Aug 3, requiring southern ASEAN countries to submit daily reports on fire and haze incidents, along with emergency response measures.

Public Advisory Issued as Dry Weather Looms

Kurup warned that hot and dry conditions could exacerbate haze risks, advising the public in affected areas to limit outdoor activities, wear face masks, and stay hydrated. The NRES Ministry will continue monitoring weather, air quality, and haze developments nationwide.
