PUTRAJAYA, Aug 27 — The number of Malaysians uncontactable following severe flooding in Nepal’s Rasuwa district has increased to 55, according to the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra).

In a statement on Thursday, the ministry said the figure was based on reports from family members, travel agencies and other sources. It cited severe disruptions to communications and electricity in the affected areas as possible reasons for the communication breakdown.

“At this stage, the ministry has not received any official confirmation of fatalities involving Malaysian citizens,” Wisma Putra said.

Earlier, the Malaysian embassy in Kathmandu received reports that 11 Malaysians in Rasuwa district had lost contact after flash floods struck the Bhote Koshi River area.

The floods caused extensive damage to roads, bridges and infrastructure, hampering access to affected zones. Nepalese authorities, including search and rescue teams using helicopters, are conducting operations, though road access remains disrupted.

Wisma Putra said the embassy is coordinating with Nepalese authorities, the Nepal Tourism Board, travel agencies and hospitals in Kathmandu to verify the safety of Malaysians involved.

Infrastructure damage includes roads, bridges, highways and communications networks. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing, but access to affected areas remains limited.

To assist, the ministry has deployed an officer from the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka to support the embassy in Kathmandu. An operations room in Putrajaya was activated at noon on Thursday to coordinate information and provide a direct communication channel for affected Malaysians and their families.

Family members with information on the uncontactable Malaysians may submit details, including full names, passport numbers, travel itineraries and last known locations, to the embassy.

Wisma Putra advised Malaysians in or near affected areas to remain vigilant, follow local authorities’ instructions and register their details via the e-Konsular portal. The ministry will continue monitoring the situation and provide updates as necessary.
