Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group) plans to expand its long-term investment in Vietnam, focusing on value-added food processing, technology adoption, green production, and export capacity as the agribusiness conglomerate deepens its presence in one of its key regional markets.

Market Impact

The group's chairman, Soopakij Chearavanont, led a delegation to Vietnam from July 9-11, where it held meetings with government leaders, the parliament's Committee for Economic and Financial Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and business partners.

During the meetings, Soopakij thanked the Vietnamese government for supporting the group's operations over the past three decades and reaffirmed CP Group's commitment to long-term investment in the country, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence applications, and sustainable agriculture.

CP Group wants Vietnam to become not only a consumer market but also a production base serving international export markets, Soopakij said.

Montri Suwanposri, vice chairman of CP Vietnam Livestock Corp., said deep processing and exports would be among the group's key investment priorities. The company plans to expand poultry processing capacity, build new processing facilities, and further develop its hygienic slaughterhouse network.

CPV Food Binh Phuoc's Dong Nai province-based integrated poultry farming and processing complex, one of the group's flagship export facilities, currently has a processing capacity of around 1 million chickens a week for export. CP Group plans to invest an additional $200 million to double capacity to 2 million chickens per week.

The group also plans to invest about $300 million in a new poultry processing plant in the northern province of Phu Tho, with a capacity of 1 million chickens per week, to strengthen supply and support export growth.

In the pork business, CP Vietnam operates five slaughterhouses nationwide and plans to invest another $100 million to expand its hygienic pork processing network to meet domestic and international standards.

The company operates an integrated "feed-farm-food" model, allowing it to manage the entire supply chain from breeding and farming to processing and distribution, improving product traceability and food safety.

Alongside capacity expansion, CP Group said it would step up the use of AI, digital technologies and data analytics in livestock management to improve production efficiency, optimize operations, and strengthen quality control across its supply chain.

The company is also investing in energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy, and resource recycling as part of its sustainability strategy.

CP Vietnam aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 through greater use of renewable energy, improved energy efficiency, and emissions management. The company also plans to promote circular economy practices by reducing packaging materials, increasing recycling, and improving resource efficiency.

The company said Vietnam would remain one of its strategic markets, with future investments focused on higher value-added segments, advanced processing technologies, and expanded production capacity to serve both domestic demand and exports.

As economic growth shows signs of divergence, the urgent challenge is not merely to provide more capital for domestic private enterprises, but to design effective channels that direct capital into manufacturing, technology, innovation, value chain linkages, and businesses capable of generating broad spillover effects, write Dr. Bui Thanh Minh and Tran Duc Anh from the Private Sector Development Research Board (Board IV) Office.
