KUALA LUMPUR/SINGAPORE (Aug 17): Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI) have introduced the Kartu Kredit Indonesia (KKI), a domestic credit card targeting retail and general consumers as an alternative for deferred domestic payments.

Market Impact

Acting BI Governor Destry Damayanti said the KKI aims to provide an efficient, prudent, and integrated domestic payment instrument aligned with the national payment system infrastructure. “This domestic scheme expands opportunities for businesses to participate in the digital ecosystem and offers alternative credit facilities to support household consumption,” she said in Jakarta on Monday.

Previously, the KKI was limited to government entities, including central and regional government work units, for official spending. The expansion now allows individuals and corporations—both conventional and sharia-compliant—to use the card, depending on the payment service provider’s offerings.

The KKI was developed by BI and ASPI, in collaboration with the Indonesian Credit Card Association (AKKI), card issuers, and payment infrastructure providers. Ryan Rizaldy, Head of BI’s Payment System Policy Department, explained that the rollout will be gradual.

In the initial phase, the KKI is available as a digital card and can be used to fund transactions via the QRIS ecosystem, including QRIS Merchant Presented Mode (MPM), QRIS Customer Presented Mode (CPM), and QRIS Tap.

Future phases will enable online transactions through digital payment gateways and offline transactions using physical cards. “Starting today, August 17, 2026, the Indonesian Credit Card is issued in digital form as a funding source for QRIS transactions, supporting both QRIS Scan and QRIS Tap,” Rizaldy said.

Seven first-mover issuers have been onboarded for the initial phase: Bank Central Asia (BCA), Bank Mandiri, Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), CIMB Niaga, Permata Bank, and Bank Mega. Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) is participating as a next-mover.

BI emphasized that the initiative supports its broader goals of improving transaction efficiency, expanding digital payment access, and diversifying domestic payment instruments. This aligns with Indonesia’s 2030 Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) and the government’s Asta Cita vision to strengthen the role of the payment system as a driver of inclusive, efficient, and sustainable economic growth.

The move reflects Indonesia’s push to reduce reliance on foreign payment networks and foster a more self-reliant digital financial ecosystem.
