PKR urged to field younger candidates instead of Tian Chua comeback

PETALING JAYA, 27 AUGUST 2026 —

Political analyst Azmi Hassan said veteran Tian Chua should focus on behind-the-scenes party revival rather than contesting Batu again.

“The Reformasi veteran still has a role to play strengthening the party offstage,” Azmi said. “Promoting new faces is more important than a Tian Chua candidacy.”

University of Tasmania academic James Chin said Tian Chua’s influence in Parliament would hinge on joining a bloc of four or five MPs. He questioned whether Tian Chua could unseat incumbent Batu MP P Prabakaran, noting the sitting legislator’s sustained local work since 2018.

Chin cited Tian Chua’s 2022 independent campaign, which underperformed against expectations. “The only advantage he retains is that he stayed out of another party during his time outside PKR,” Chin said.

He added that party members view Tian Chua as unpredictable, limiting his internal sway. “His grassroots strength remains, but overall he is no more experienced than many contemporaries,” Chin said. “The political setting has changed completely since he left Parliament.”

Tian Chua told FMT that residents in Batu want him to return as their MP, but the final decision belongs to PKR’s top leadership.

He served two consecutive terms from 2008 until barred from contesting in 2018 over a RM2,000 fine for insulting a police officer’s modesty. After backing independent candidate Prabakaran’s win in 2018, Tian Chua ran against him as an independent in 2022 and was expelled by PKR in January 2023.
