KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 (Bloomberg/Reuters) — Cloud computing providers are snapping up high-capacity hard drives at an accelerating pace as artificial intelligence (AI) fuels an explosion in enterprise data storage needs, reshaping investment priorities across the tech sector for the coming decade.

The relentless growth of AI workloads—from training large language models to real-time inference—has intensified demand for reliable, cost-effective storage solutions. Enterprise customers, particularly cloud data centres, are prioritising long-term data retention, keeping hard drive manufacturers like Seagate Technology in high demand despite supply constraints and shifting industry dynamics.

Seagate’s latest financial results for its fiscal fourth quarter and full-year 2026 underscore this trend, revealing sustained demand from cloud providers even as the company withholds details on future hard drive allocation commitments. The surge in AI-driven data generation is forcing organisations to store vast datasets long after computations are completed, reinforcing the critical role of hard disk drives (HDDs) in enterprise infrastructure.

“As AI accelerates data generation and its value, we see durable long-term demand for mass capacity storage,” said Dave Mosley, Seagate’s chair and chief executive officer, in a statement accompanying the results. The company expects exabyte-scale demand to strengthen through its Mozaic platform and Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology roadmap, which are designed to meet the scalability needs of AI-driven workloads.

Seagate’s fiscal 2026 performance reflects this demand. Annual revenue rose compared to the prior year, while fourth-quarter results surpassed company expectations. Operating cash flow reached $3.7 billion for the fiscal year, with free cash flow totaling $3.1 billion. The fourth quarter alone generated $1.3 billion in operating cash flow. The company also reduced total debt by $1.4 billion during the year, including $302 million in the final quarter, ending with outstanding debt of $3.6 billion.

Cash and cash equivalents stood at $1.7 billion, while ordinary shares outstanding totaled 227 million. Seagate declared a quarterly dividend of $0.74 per share.

Looking ahead, Seagate projects first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue of approximately $4.1 billion, with non-GAAP diluted earnings per share estimated at around $7.30, subject to market variations. “Seagate’s strong fourth quarter exceeded our expectations for revenue and non-GAAP EPS, capping a fiscal 2026 in which we grew,” Mosley said. “Our performance is being driven by robust cloud data center demand and disciplined execution, and we see the momentum continuing in 2027.”

The AI infrastructure build-out is not only reshaping storage demand but also influencing broader industry strategies. Seagate’s rival, Micron Technology, took a more decisive step in 2025 by exiting its Crucial consumer RAM business to reallocate supply toward enterprise customers.

Micron described the move as part of a strategic shift to “improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments,” effectively cutting off a long-standing consumer supply line to prioritise cloud and AI-driven markets.

While Seagate has not yet taken such a drastic step with its hard drive business, Mosley’s emphasis on cloud demand suggests the company may increasingly prioritise enterprise customers if current trends persist. Industry analysts note that HDD supply remains tight, with manufacturers already securing long-term commitments from cloud providers years in advance—a reflection of the structural shift underway.

The AI data explosion is particularly pronounced in hyperscale data centres, where storage capacity must scale alongside compute power. Unlike traditional enterprise storage, AI workloads require not only high throughput but also massive, cost-efficient capacity for archival and retrieval. This has elevated the role of HDDs, which remain the most economical solution for storing large volumes of data over extended periods.

Seagate’s HAMR technology, which increases storage density by using heat to write data more precisely, is seen as a key enabler for meeting future demand. The Mozaic platform, designed for mass-capacity storage, is also expected to play a central role as AI models grow in size and complexity. The company’s financial resilience—marked by strong cash flow, debt reduction, and shareholder returns—positions it well to capitalise on this trend.

For Malaysia, which hosts a growing number of data centres catering to regional and global cloud providers, the surge in AI-driven storage demand presents both opportunities and challenges. The country’s strategic location, robust digital infrastructure, and government incentives for tech investment have made it a favoured destination for hyperscale facilities.

However, the tightening supply of high-capacity HDDs could lead to higher costs or delays in capacity expansion, particularly for local cloud operators reliant on enterprise-grade storage solutions.

Regional stakeholders, including data centre operators and cloud service providers, are closely monitoring supply dynamics. Some have begun diversifying their storage strategies, exploring hybrid solutions that combine HDDs with solid-state drives (SSDs) for performance-critical workloads. Others are entering into long-term supply agreements with manufacturers to secure capacity amid rising demand.

Industry experts caution that while the AI boom is driving storage demand, the sustainability of this growth depends on several factors, including technological advancements, supply chain stability, and economic conditions. The transition to higher-density storage solutions, such as HAMR, will be critical in meeting future needs without a proportional increase in costs.

As the AI landscape evolves, the demand for cloud storage is expected to remain a defining trend in the tech sector. For Seagate and its peers, the focus is shifting from consumer markets to enterprise and cloud-driven applications, with long-term contracts and technological innovation becoming key differentiators. The company’s outlook for fiscal 2027 suggests confidence in this trajectory, even as global economic uncertainties and supply constraints pose ongoing challenges.

For now, the message from the industry is clear: AI is not just transforming computing—it is reshaping the very infrastructure that underpins the digital economy, with storage at its core.
