KUALA LUMPUR — Google will invest US$2 billion in its first data centre campus in Malaysia, located in Selangor, as part of efforts to expand its digital infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

The project includes commitments to fund grid upgrades, increase renewable energy capacity, and restore more water than it consumes, aiming to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations.

Construction of the campus is expected to support about 4,200 jobs annually over three to five years, according to Google.

Once operational, the facility will sustain hundreds of permanent, high-skilled roles, including network deployment engineers, facility controls specialists, and clean energy managers.

Google estimates that the campus will generate US$3.2 billion in local economic activity by 2030, driven by local procurement, service contracts, and spending from visiting teams.

The company highlighted that for every job created at the data centre, nine additional jobs are expected to be generated in the local community—a ratio it says is above the industry average.

Background: Rising Demand for Data Centres in Southeast Asia

The expansion of data centres across Southeast Asia has raised concerns about their electricity and water consumption.

Google acknowledged these challenges, noting that large data centres could support grid stability if operators contribute to new infrastructure and energy capacity.

The tech giant said it funds all electricity consumption and directly invests in grid upgrades.

For the Selangor facility, Google has signed long-term agreements for 50 megawatts of new off-site solar capacity, which will be added to Malaysia’s national grid.

Additionally, Google has committed to restoring 120% of the water it consumes by 2030.

In Malaysia, this includes a partnership with the Global Environment Centre and the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) to restore Taman Aman Lake.

Current Development: Efficiency and Sustainability Measures Google also highlighted improvements in the efficiency of its artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The company said a single Gemini AI prompt now consumes energy equivalent to less than nine seconds of television viewing and about five drops of water.

It added that the model’s energy footprint has decreased 33-fold over the past 12 months.

Google’s Selangor data centre will serve as a critical hub for processing and storing digital information, supporting services such as Waze navigation, Google search queries, and cloud-based business applications like Google Docs.

The facility will also underpin public infrastructure, including emergency dispatch systems and hospital electronic health records.

Malaysia Market Impact: Economic and Environmental Benefits The investment is expected to boost Malaysia’s digital economy, creating long-term economic benefits through job creation and local business opportunities.

Google’s commitment to renewable energy and water restoration aligns with Malaysia’s sustainability goals, particularly in reducing carbon emissions and improving water management.

The project could also enhance Malaysia’s position as a regional hub for digital infrastructure, attracting further investments in technology and related sectors.

Sector and Company Specifics Google’s investment in Malaysia follows similar expansions in other Southeast Asian countries, reflecting the region’s growing demand for digital services.

The company’s focus on sustainability—including water restoration and renewable energy—sets a benchmark for responsible data centre development.

Google’s AI efficiency improvements further demonstrate its commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations.

Outlook: Long-Term Growth and Sustainability The Selangor data centre is expected to play a key role in supporting Malaysia’s digital transformation and economic growth.

Google’s long-term commitments to grid upgrades, renewable energy, and water restoration underscore its strategy for sustainable infrastructure development.

As AI and digital services continue to expand, such investments will be in balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
