Malaysia’s Tech Upstarts Drive RM10 Billion Semiconductor Boom as Bursa Index Hits Two-Year High

Market Impact

KUALA LUMPUR — Two Malaysian technology firms that were unlisted just six months ago now command a combined valuation of nearly RM10 billion, marking a quiet but seismic shift in the nation’s semiconductor sector. On Monday, the Bursa Malaysia Technology Index surged 2.5% to 79.37 points—the highest level in two years—with gains led not by traditional assembly giants but by a wave of newcomers largely unknown to the public.

The transformation reflects a deliberate pivot from low-value manufacturing to high-tech design and advanced packaging, driven by the government’s National Semiconductor Strategy. Among the standout performers is SkyeChip, the first homegrown chip design firm to list on Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market when it debuted on May 20.

Founded in Penang in 2019 by electrical engineer Fong Swee Kiang—a 20-year Intel veteran—SkyeChip specializes in silicon intellectual property (IP) and custom application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for artificial intelligence applications.

Fong told reporters before the IPO that the company had achieved 30% annual revenue growth and a 30% net profit margin. Investors have rewarded that track record: SkyeChip’s shares have jumped 269% from their 88 sen offer price to RM3.25, giving the firm a market capitalization of RM5.84 billion. Over 60% of its RM352 million IPO proceeds are earmarked for R&D, aligning with the government’s push to move up the semiconductor value chain.

Joining SkyeChip in this new wave is NationGate Holdings, which listed on the ACE Market in January 2023 and has since become Nvidia’s sole contract manufacturer of AI servers in Southeast Asia. The Penang-based electronic manufacturing services (EMS) company saw revenue explode by 720% to RM5.27 billion in 2024, earning a spot on the Fortune Southeast Asia 500 list. Its shares have risen 69% this year, valuing the company at RM3.51 billion.

Stratus Global, which went public just three weeks ago, operates in a less glamorous but critical niche: automated material handling systems. These robotic systems transport delicate semiconductor wafers through fabrication plants without human contact. Its IPO was oversubscribed by 129 times, and shares have since surged 279% from 80 sen, giving the company a valuation of RM3.79 billion.

Dagang NeXchange (DNeX), meanwhile, saw its shares surge as the most actively traded stock on Monday. Its crown jewel is a 60% stake in SilTerra, a Kulim-based wafer fabrication plant and one of Southeast Asia’s few chipmakers capable of producing advanced semiconductors. While SkyeChip designs the blueprints, SilTerra brings them to life.

For decades, Malaysia’s semiconductor industry operated primarily in the back-end segment—assembly, testing, and packaging. But the new generation of listed firms is staking claims across the entire value chain: design (SkyeChip), fabrication (SilTerra), advanced packaging (Inari Amertron), AI server manufacturing (NationGate), and factory automation (Stratus). Analysts say this diversification positions Malaysia to capture higher-value segments amid a global supply chain realignment.

“Malaysia now has listed companies at almost every link of the semiconductor value chain,” said one industry observer. “This is no longer just about assembling chips—it’s about designing them, fabricating them, and building the infrastructure to support them.”

Local brokerages are taking note. BIMB Securities highlights that AI investment cycles are expanding beyond raw computing power into areas like high-speed optical connectivity, AI accelerators, and advanced packaging—segments where Malaysian firms are gaining traction. Public Investment Bank adds that proposed U.S. Restrictions on Chinese-made optical transceivers could redirect more of the global supply chain to Malaysia.

Yet caution is warranted. Stocks that nearly quadruple in weeks are priced for perfection, and analysts warn of lofty expectations. BIMB Securities, while raising its earnings forecast for SkyeChip, maintained a “sell” call, arguing that current valuations already reflect much of the anticipated growth. These young companies carry valuations that assume years of flawless execution—any misstep could trigger sharp corrections.

The talent crunch remains a persistent challenge. Despite progress, Malaysia still faces shortages of skilled engineers and designers, a hurdle the government is attempting to address through education and industry collaboration. Semiconductor cycles are notoriously volatile; when demand cools, as it inevitably does, the impact on revenue and valuations can be severe.

Still, the broader narrative is undeniable. For half a century, Malaysia’s semiconductor sector thrived by assembling and testing others’ innovations—profitable, reliable, but largely anonymous. This new cohort represents the first generation of Malaysian companies putting their names on the ideas themselves.

“The rally will cool, as all rallies eventually do,” said the writer in the original article. “The climb up the value chain, though? That has only just begun.”
