TSMC will add another $100 billion to its US investment plan, bringing the total to $265 billion, as it accelerates construction of four new fabrication facilities and its first advanced packaging plant in Arizona.

Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang said demand from customers in the artificial-intelligence boom remains strong over multiple years. The first Arizona fab is already operating and matching production yields at TSMC’s flagship site in Taiwan. The second fab will soon receive manufacturing equipment, while work continues on the third. Construction has begun on a fourth fab and the first advanced packaging facility at the campus.

Together, these projects could give Arizona 12 fabrication and advanced packaging facilities plus a research and development centre. TSMC has not provided a completion date for the newest additions.

TSMC’s second-quarter earnings showed revenue of NT$1.27 trillion ($40.20 billion), up 36% from a year earlier. Net income rose 77.4% to NT$706.56 billion. Advanced manufacturing technologies—defined as 7-nanometre processes and below—generated 77% of total wafer revenue, according to the company’s official earnings report.

The chipmaker supplies many of the advanced processors used by AI system builders, including Nvidia. Its position makes TSMC a key indicator of expected AI computing capacity. The latest results suggest demand for leading-edge chip production remains strong.

Huang said the accelerated Arizona buildout signals that TSMC expects AI infrastructure spending to remain important well beyond the current product cycle. Semiconductor factories cost billions, require years of planning and cannot quickly change direction.

Advanced AI processors often combine multiple pieces of silicon with high-bandwidth memory inside one tightly connected package. This makes advanced packaging capacity almost as critical as the fabrication plants themselves, according to a breakdown of the AI memory chip supercycle the company cites.

The Arizona site provides a major manufacturing base closer to US customers and supports Washington’s push to increase domestic semiconductor production. However, Huang pointed to shortages of construction workers and limited infrastructure that could slow the rollout.

The existing roadmap targets volume production at the second fab in the second half of 2027 and at the third fab, designed for N2 and A16 technologies, by the end of the decade. The newest expansion goes beyond that schedule, leaving the overall timetable unclear.

TSMC plans to keep its earliest and most advanced production work in Taiwan. Huang said leading-edge processes require close cooperation between research teams and factory operators. Once a process stabilises, the company can consider transferring it overseas. Arizona will thus become more important without replacing Taiwan as TSMC’s main technology centre.

While South Africa is distant from Arizona’s new fabs, local businesses depend on the same semiconductor supply chain. Banks, telecoms, retailers, startups and public services increasingly use cloud platforms powered by advanced processors. South African consumers rely heavily on imported smartphones, computers, networking equipment and servers.

More production capacity could ease some supply pressure over time. It may also help cloud providers expand AI services without depending too heavily on one manufacturing region. However, higher US manufacturing costs, electricity demand, advanced packaging limits and rising demand for high-bandwidth memory could keep infrastructure prices elevated.

For South African companies, the practical question is whether global chip supply can grow fast enough to make AI tools more accessible. Large businesses may absorb higher cloud bills, but smaller companies and startups have less room to do so.

Success would give the AI industry more room to grow. Persistent labour and infrastructure delays would show how slowly the physical world moves compared with software demand.
