Palestinian children flew 69 kites from a Gaza beach on Monday to thank Malaysia for its support during Israel’s renewed threats to displace residents.

Market Impact

The stunt, organised by Malaysia-based NGO Cinta Gaza Malaysia (CGM), carried messages of gratitude on each kite, CGM said. “Thank you for always standing with us. Your support gives us strength,” an unnamed female CGM activist said in a video posted to Instagram.

Malaysian social-media users responded with messages of thanks and prayers for Gaza. Actress Tiz Zaqyah called for protection for Palestinian children, while singer Pija Minaz thanked residents of Gaza. Instagram user @illianaaziz wrote: “Value and defend our homeland. Our independence is their dream. One day we will celebrate together.”

CGM said the video was filmed before Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, renewed threats to evict Palestinians from areas where kites or balloons are flown. Katz made the remarks on 27 August during a high-level security meeting with Israel Defence Forces chief of staff Lt Gen Eyal Zamir and other senior officers.

Katz said the military would take all necessary action, including relocating residents, and that kites and balloons would be treated like drones, whether or not they carried explosives.

Israel has previously banned kite-flying in parts of Gaza, prompting parents to keep children indoors.
