Russian Drone Strikes on Moscow, Ukrainian Village Kill 13 as War Escalates

Market Impact

MOSCOW/KYIV, Aug 18 (Reuters) — Ukraine launched one of its largest drone attacks on Russia since Moscow’s 2022 invasion, firing nearly 800 drones overnight, while a separate Russian missile strike on a northeastern Ukrainian village killed at least 10 civilians and wounded 17 others, officials said on Tuesday.

The dual assaults underscored the intensifying long-range aerial duel between the two nations, with neither side making significant battlefield gains despite heavy use of drones and ground robots restricting troop movements along the roughly 1,250-kilometre front line in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Ukraine has increasingly relied on domestically produced long-range drones to strike deep inside Russia, aiming to pressure President Vladimir Putin into accepting a ceasefire. Putin has shown no indication of halting the invasion.

“Putin continues to drag out the war instead of accepting Ukraine’s realistic ceasefire proposals and ending the bloodshed,” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X.

Russian air defences intercepted 791 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions, including annexed Crimea and the Black and Azov seas, the Defence Ministry in Moscow said. This marked the second-largest drone attack since January 2025, according to an Associated Press tally.

More than 600 drones targeted the Moscow region, where 180 were shot down, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said. No deaths or major damage were reported, though three people were wounded. Three private houses were also damaged in the adjacent Ryazan region, where three people were injured.

The attack ignited a fire at a warehouse belonging to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online retailer, in an industrial zone. Ukraine has previously targeted the company, alleging it supports the Russian military—a claim Moscow denies. Wildberries said the facility sustained “insignificant damage.”

Russian state media coverage of the attack was limited. State-run Russia 1 and Channel One omitted the incident from their morning bulletins, while RIA Novosti featured it as a top story, describing it as “one of the most large-scale attacks on Moscow since the beginning of the summer.” Pro-Kremlin tabloid MK also highlighted the strike.

In Ukraine, a Russian missile strike on the village of Pechenihy in Kharkiv region killed 10 civilians and wounded 17, according to preliminary reports from Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as “brutal,” noting damage to 10 homes, a café, post office, store, and at least seven vehicles.

“We will definitely respond to this Russian strike,” Zelenskyy said on social media.

Separately, three people were killed and three others wounded in Russian attacks on Ukraine’s Sumy region over the past day, Ukraine’s National Police reported.

The escalation follows reports that two British companies supplied drones used by Ukraine in strikes on Russian soil. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s support for Ukraine, stating, “We are providing support so that Ukraine can defend itself, and that’s been the British position all the way through this conflict.”

The Russian Embassy in the UK warned that London’s actions would “inevitably carry consequences,” while Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow could view British involvement as “participation in the war, with all the ensuing consequences.”

The war has seen Ukraine deploy increasingly sophisticated drone technology, drawing global attention to its domestic defence innovations. Analysts say the current stalemate on the front line, combined with the high volume of drone strikes, reflects the conflict’s persistent deadlock.

With no immediate signs of de-escalation, the humanitarian toll continues to rise, as evidenced by the civilian casualties in both Russia and Ukraine. The international community remains divided over the provision of military support, with implications for regional stability and global security frameworks.
