Indian equities opened higher on Tuesday as easing crude‑oil prices and softer U.S. Treasury yields lifted sentiment, with the BSE Sensex trading around 74,915 points and the NSE Nifty near 23,450.
Market Impact
The gains marked a fourth consecutive session of advances for both indices, a pattern the market‑watchers said reflects a “decisively constructive” tactical setup driven by a falling oil risk premium, recovering foreign institutional investor (FII) inflows and positive momentum from the GIFT Nifty futures market.
The move also came as global risk appetite rebounded after a sharp retreat in crude prices, renewed diplomatic posturing between Washington and Tehran and optimism ahead of high‑level U.S.–China talks, according to market and banking expert Ajay Bagga.
At 9:25 a.m. IST, the Sensex opened at 74,901.50, up 56.29 points (0.08 %) from the previous close of 74,858.99, and was trading at about 74,915.28. The Nifty opened at 23,454.05, up 35.30 points (0.15 %) from the prior close of 23,414.30, and was trading around 23,449.60. All broad‑market indices were in the green.
Sector‑wise, the Nifty IT index was the top laggard, shedding more than one percent, followed by the Nifty Mid‑Small‑Cap IT & Telecom index. In contrast, the Nifty Realty index emerged as the top gainer, rising over one percent, while most other sectors posted gains.
On the NSE, the leading gainers included Coal India, HDFC Life, Asian Paints, IndiGo, SBI Life, Mahindra & Mahindra, HDFC Bank, JSW Steel, Bajaj Finance, Tata Steel, Power Grid, Larsen & Toubro and Bajaj Finance again. The top losers were HCL Technologies, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Cipla, Bajaj Auto and Axis Bank.
On the BSE, the biggest advancers were Adani Ports, HDFC Life, IndiGo, Asian Paints, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki, Trent, Larsen & Toubro, Power Grid, NTPC and Eternal. The main decliners on the BSE were HCL Technologies, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Hindustan Unilever and Reliance Industries.
Bagga said the market’s “tactical setup is decisively constructive” and highlighted that “expiry day moves expected to be volatile in the last hour.” He added that crude oil posted a fourth straight session of losses, “unwinding a significant chunk of their recent geopolitical risk premium.” In the commodity market, Brent crude was trading around USD 101.24 per barrel and crude oil around USD 93.03 per barrel at the time of reporting.
Market analyst Vipin Dixena echoed the view that the opening was buoyed by the decline in crude prices and softer U.S. bond yields. He noted that the Nifty had now risen for four consecutive sessions, with domestic liquidity cushioning the market.
Dixena said sustained FII participation would be needed to make the recovery “much more convincing.” He pointed out that the drop in oil prices toward the $100‑101 range was “clearly positive for India because it reduces pressure on the rupee, inflation and the country’s import bill.”
Technically, Dixena identified the 23,500‑23,600 band as the key resistance zone for the Nifty, saying a “convincing move above 23,600” would signal a shift from recovery to a stronger trend. He added that “above that, 23,800‑24,000 becomes possible,” while the immediate support lay at 23,300, with a deeper support level at 23,000. He also noted an improvement in the Relative Strength Index, indicating that bearish momentum was gradually easing.
The combination of lower oil prices, easing U.S. yields and a supportive domestic liquidity environment set the tone for the day’s trading, with analysts watching FII flows and the upcoming expiry hour for potential volatility.
