Kolkata: Declining crude oil prices and hopes of peace talks in West Asia helped the Indian stock market to open in the green this morning.
Market Impact
A few minutes after trading began this morning, Sensex 30 was trading at 73,671.57, up 0.12% or 91.03 points while Nifty 50 was at 23,084.00, up 0.091% or 20.90 points. In the first few minutes both the benchmark indices were seen extending their gains.
Crude oil price today Oil prices crept down on Friday as markets looked forward to the possibility of a truce between the US and Iran even as they remained wary of attacks. Reuters reported that Brent crude was down 87 cents, or 0.82% and reached $105.73 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate was down $1.56, or 1.65% and stood at $93.05 a barrel.
Rupee vs Dollar This morning in early trade, the rupee went up 14 paise to reach 95.85 against US dollar. On Thursday (Sept 24) the rupee tumbled by 26 paise to settle at 95.99 against the US dollar at close. Heavy selling by equity investors, a stronger dollar, higher bond yields in the US and rise in crude oil prices eroded the rupee.
Prominent gainers and laggards In early trade, the prominent gainers in the Sensex 30 basket were M&M, LT, ICICIBANK, BAJFINANCE and AXISBANK while the prominent laggards in the same basket were SUNPHARMA, HCLTECH, TECHM, TCS and INFY. Asian markets this morning The major Asian stock market indices were in the mixed zone today.
Around 9 AM, GIFT NIFTY was up 0.04%, Nikkei 225 up 1.13%, Straits Times up 0.09%, Hang Seng down 1.98%, SET Composite up 0.39%, Jakarta Composite down 0.17% and Shanghai Composite down 1.24%. Indian market yesterday "Indian benchmark indices ended sharply lower on September 24, amid weak global cues as the US benchmark Treasury yield climbed to its highest level since 2007, while crude oil prices surged to $105 a barrel.
After a weak opening, selling intensified through the session, with profit booking seen across sectors, particularly banks and NBFCs. All the sectoral indices ended in the red. The Sensex settled 1,247.71 points or 1.67% lower at 73,580.54 and the Nifty ended 383.70 points or 1.64% lower at 23,063.10. There were no gainers on BSE while Bajaj Finance 5.47%, Axis Bank 4.67% and Bajaj Finserv 4.06% were the top losers," said Rajesh Agarwal of AUM Capital.
The BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices however defied the trend and gained 0.71% and 0.96% respectively. With the exception of Nikkei, all the other Asian markets ended in the red.
