Police in Penang on Wednesday burned and shredded 2,436 exhibits worth RM13.6 million seized across 2,003 cases dating to 1997.

Market Impact

The destruction order, issued by deputy public prosecutors under Section 407(2) of the Criminal Procedure Code, covered three units: the criminal investigation division, the narcotics division and the commercial crime division. Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Keng said the exhibits included 1,995 kg of heroin, cannabis, ketamine, methamphetamine, various pills and 500 kg of processing equipment, along with 666 litres of liquid narcotics valued at RM11.5 million.

Lim said the haul also contained 177 Bitcoin mining machines, 2,080 bottles of liquor, 1,183 cartons of cigarettes, 30 gambling simulators, 108 mobile card printers and 122 mobile phones worth about RM800,000. These items came from 271 cases handled by the criminal investigation division since 2019, including 26 contraband exhibits, seven Bitcoin wallets and 229 gambling-related items.

The commercial crime division contributed 162 cases, mostly electronic waste and audio-visual equipment used in scams, with an estimated destruction value of RM1.3 million. Lim said items classified as e-waste or hazardous chemicals would be handed to licensed contractors under the Department of Environment for compliant disposal.

The disposal ceremony took place at the Centralised Property Room in Kepala Batas, witnessed by reporters after the event. Lim said the exhibits were destroyed to clear backlog and prevent storage costs from rising. The police did not disclose how many of the cases had led to convictions.
