Huawei Technologies Co Ltd today unveiled the MatePad Air, a 509g tablet that combines an ultra-thin 5.3mm chassis with AI assistants for document creation, note-taking and study support.

Market Impact

The device runs PC-grade WPS Office and WPS AI Office, allowing users to edit PDFs with an AI Summarizer and generate slide decks via AI Generate Slides. Spreadsheet work is handled through AI Sheet Assistant, while live lectures can be transcribed in real time by AI Speech-to-Text. Handwritten notes are cleaned up by AI Handwriting Enhancement, and AI Tutor offers step-by-step problem-solving across math, physics, chemistry, economics and biology.

Hardware weighs 509g bare and 817g with the Smart Magnetic Keyboard, undercutting most laptops. The 12-inch 2.8K OLED display features a PaperMatte anti-glare finish, 144Hz refresh rate and 1,200-nit brightness. Under the hood, 8GB of RAM supports smooth multitasking on an 8-core processor, while a 10,100 mAh battery delivers up to 10 hours of video playback. The 6-speaker sound system and Wi-Fi 7 round out connectivity.

Huawei Malaysia country director Foo Chih Wei said the AI features aim to cut manual work in meetings and study sessions. He added that the tablet targets students and mobile professionals who need lightweight portability without sacrificing productivity.

The MatePad Air launches in Malaysia on 18 August 2026 and will be sold via Huawei’s online store, Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop. Customer support is available through the MyHUAWEI app and official WhatsApp channels.
