Cursor, the AI coding assistant now part of SpaceXAI, launched Origin this week, a new platform for storing, browsing and collaborating on code, directly challenging GitHub after years of reliability issues on the incumbent platform.

Market Impact

Origin reproduces GitHub’s core workflows—repositories, pull requests and team editing—while remaining interoperable with GitHub so developers can sync repos in either direction without abandoning existing workflows. Cursor said in its blog that “your GitHub repos can sit alongside the ones Cursor hosts” once a user connects the two accounts.

The launch coincides with a six-hour global outage at GitHub that pushed error rates near 20% the same day. It follows a pattern: LeadDev’s analysis shows GitHub suffered 257 outages over the past year, driving “a visible exodus of high-profile users,” according to LeadDev’s Charles Humble. In response, GitHub promised remedial action after earlier outages, but the incidents have kept recurring.

Cursor is not the first to try breaking GitHub’s dominance. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2012 and, by last October, the platform reported 180 million developers—more than any other source-code host. Yet persistent downtime and performance degradation have created an opening for alternatives.

Origin is the newest product from a company that previously focused on an AI code editor. Cursor now plans “agent-native” features for Origin and a broader app ecosystem to expand beyond simple hosting.

For Malaysian developers and startups that rely on GitHub for open-source contributions, documentation and recruitment pipelines, Origin’s interoperability lowers the switching cost and could accelerate the use of non-GitHub repositories.
