Meta said on Tuesday more than 1 billion WhatsApp users now log in with a passkey, up from the prior figure when passkey support expanded to iOS in early 2024.

Market Impact

Users can add multiple passkeys to a single account to sign in from different devices, the company said. Managing passkeys is done in Settings > Account > Passkeys, according to Meta’s blog post.

WhatsApp also upgraded its two-step verification from a six-digit PIN to a full alphanumeric password that can include special characters. “If you’ve been using ‘123456,’ this is your sign to upgrade,” the company said.

Calls from unknown numbers will now show more context on Android, including the caller’s location and whether the number is in the user’s contacts or common groups. “Scammers rely on urgency—now you can take a beat with some more info before answering,” WhatsApp said.

The changes follow Meta’s rollout of passkeys to Facebook logins in June 2025, extending the phishing-resistant method beyond messaging. Support for passkeys began in Android in October 2023.
