KUALA LUMPUR — The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) will have a daily capacity of about 10,000 passengers, based on the available train sets, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said on Friday.

Market Impact

The capacity is based on 10 train sets, each capable of carrying up to 425 passengers, he told a launch event for the Comprehensive Inspection Train (CIT) and the introduction of the main station design concept in Gombak.

The minister expects strong initial demand as the public tests the service, which offers faster travel between the East and West Coasts.

A journey from Gombak Integrated Terminal to Kota Sultan Ahmad Shah (KotaSAS) is expected to take just 1 hour 35 minutes, compared to about three hours by road.

Travel from Gombak to Kuala Terengganu is estimated at three hours, while Gombak to Kota Bharu is projected to take about four hours.

All 10 train sets must undergo an 8,000-kilometre Fault-Free Run (FFR) test before receiving operational approval.

The FFR is a critical process to ensure train performance and reliability meet standards before passenger services begin.

The minister noted that the FFR typically takes two to three months, but efforts are underway to shorten the process without compromising safety.

Five ECRL train sets have arrived in Malaysia, with the rest to be delivered in stages after completing tests in China.

Ticket pricing has not yet been announced, and fare details will be shared before operations commence.
