Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the coalition will use a Melaka-specific electoral pact formula for the next state election rather than copying the Johor and Negeri Sembilan models.

Market Impact

“Any negotiations must ensure the benefits clearly outweigh the drawbacks,” Zahid told reporters in Kuala Lumpur. “We must be honest, sincere and honour the promises we make, not do the opposite after an agreement.”

He gave Melaka BN chief Ab Rauf Yusoh the mandate to negotiate with other parties. Any outcome will return to national level for further scrutiny and finalisation. State-level cooperation, he said, should also strengthen national political stability.

BN formed the state government in 2022 after winning 21 of 28 seats; Pakatan Harapan took five and Perikatan Nasional two. The current state executive council includes PH assemblymen, reflecting the federal unity coalition’s structure.

The Melaka assembly’s term expires on December 31 unless dissolved earlier. A state election must be held within 60 days of dissolution.
