The existing vehicle trade-in scheme offers RM2,000 per car scrapped after 20 years, topped up by RM2,000 from Proton or Perodua for a total of RM4,000. No additional funding is available yet, Loke said, but the ministry may expand the scheme to motorcycles with a smaller subsidy.

Loke proposed a RM1,000 motorcycle subsidy, lower than the car amount because there are more motorcycles on Malaysian roads. Funding would come from the ministry’s existing revenue, including proceeds from special vehicle registration numbers, rather than a new allocation from the Finance Ministry.

MMSDA president Dato’ Wong Fung said the association first wrote to the Prime Minister in December seeking the RM1,000 subsidy for motorcycles over 10 years old. Wong said the scheme would improve road safety, cut pollution, ease burdens on low-income riders and support the motorcycle industry and national economy.

The Malaysia Motorcycle Manufacturers Association also wrote to the ministry on 7 May requesting details and a dialogue. The scheme remains a proposal, with the ministry yet to allocate a budget line.
