Malaysia’s Export Unit Value Index Rises 0.6% in July 2026 as Volume Surges

Market Impact

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 (Bernama) — Malaysia’s export unit value index rose 0.6% month-on-month to 163.6 points in July 2026, up from 162.6 points in June, according to data released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

The increase was driven by gains in mineral fuels, manufactured goods, machinery, and transport equipment, DOSM said in a statement. The export volume index also climbed 8.1% to 223.3 points, reflecting higher demand for chemicals, machinery, transport equipment, and manufactured goods. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the export volume index rose 7.9% from 206.9 points in June. Year-on-year, both the export unit value index and volume index expanded by 8.1% and 27.7%, respectively.

Meanwhile, the import unit value index declined 1.2% to 129.2 points from 130.8 points, primarily due to lower prices for mineral fuels and chemicals. However, the import volume index surged 14% month-on-month, supported by increases in food, machinery, transport equipment, and manufactured goods. The seasonally adjusted import volume index rose 13.2% to 199.7 points from 176.4 points. Year-on-year, the import unit value index increased 3.4%, while the import volume index jumped 25%.

Malaysia’s terms of trade improved 1.9% month-on-month to 126.6 points in July 2026, up from 124.3 points in June, driven by higher prices for mineral fuels, manufactured goods, and inedible crude materials. Year-on-year, terms of trade rose 4.5% from 121.1 points in July 2025.

The data suggests strengthening export momentum, particularly in high-value sectors such as machinery and transport equipment, while import growth reflects rising domestic demand. Analysts may assess whether the divergence between unit value and volume trends signals price competitiveness or structural shifts in trade patterns.

Details on sector-specific contributions and corporate-level impacts were not provided in the DOSM release.
