Proton Holdings Berhad expanded its C-segment sedan lineup on Monday with the launch of two new S70 variants, the Lite and Prime, priced from RM59,800 and RM62,800 respectively without insurance, marking the national carmaker’s latest push to capture volume in Malaysia’s competitive sedan market.

Market Impact

The introduction widens the S70 range below the existing Executive and Premium trims, offering a lower entry point while retaining a suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) typically reserved for higher-spec models. Proton said the move responds to demand for accessible safety technology in the segment, where rivals such as the Honda City and Toyota Vios have traditionally dominated.

The S70 1.5 Lite is powered by a 1.5-litre i-GT naturally aspirated engine producing 120 horsepower and 150 Nm of torque, mated to a continuously variable transmission. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Collision Warning, and Door Opening Warning.

Convenience features comprise an electronic parking brake, cruise control, halogen headlamps, LED daytime running lights, 16-inch alloy wheels, fabric seats, an 8-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a reverse camera, remote engine start, and rear parking sensors.

The S70 1.5 Prime adds LED headlamps with automatic activation, auto-folding side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette seats, automatic climate control, and front parking sensors to the Lite’s specification sheet. Both variants carry the same powertrain and core ADAS suite, differentiating primarily on comfort and lighting equipment.

To support ownership, Proton introduced the Pro-Warranty package covering five years with unlimited mileage and six complimentary labour services. Under Pro-Finance, buyers can access financing tenures of up to nine years at interest rates starting from 2.35 per cent per annum for vehicles registered before 31 December 2026. The Pro-Shield programme bundles windscreen protection, special perils coverage, personal accident protection of up to RM15,000 per passenger, and flood relief assistance of up to RM2,000.

A Pro-Trade-In scheme offers additional support of up to RM2,000 for customers trading in an older vehicle for a new S70.

Service commitments include a 1-Day Service Delivery promise for routine maintenance and a 3-Day Work-In-Progress Guarantee. Should repairs exceed three working days, Proton will provide a replacement vehicle and one free service, subject to terms and conditions. The guarantees apply across Proton’s authorised service network in Peninsular Malaysia.

For the launch period, Proton is offering special promotional pricing after rebates. The S70 1.5 Lite is available at RM56,800, while the S70 1.5 Prime retails at RM59,800, both on-the-road without insurance for Peninsular Malaysia. The limited-time prices represent a RM3,000 saving over the standard list prices and are intended to accelerate showroom traffic during the year-end sales cycle.
