Selangor and federal authorities will launch five immediate measures to reduce flooding in the Klang Valley following a meeting between Federal Territories Minister Hannah Yeoh and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Market Impact

The governments agreed to form a technical committee within two weeks, according to a joint statement issued after the talks. The package includes studies of Batu and Klang Gate dams, site searches for new flood-retention ponds, upgrades to three existing ponds, and coordinated river dredging and silt removal.

The technical meeting will set project scope, cost estimates, financing sources and implementation methods, with initial details to be prepared before the next parliamentary session and the 2027 budget.

Teams will assess Batu and Klang Gate dams to determine if current capacity can meet water-management needs for the next 20-30 years, and identify upstream locations suitable for new retention ponds. The review will consider technical suitability, land status, environmental impact and flood-risk reduction.

Three existing ponds—Kampung Laksamana, Sungai Kertas and Bukit Lagong—will be evaluated for capacity upgrades. The Bukit Lagong site lies inside a protected forest and would need to be degazetted for use as a retention pond.

River dredging and silt disposal will be coordinated by Selangor’s Department of Irrigation and Drainage and its Federal Territories counterpart in Kuala Lumpur. The Federal Territories JPS will also identify a 12.14-hectare site in Selangor for disposing of dredged silt.

The governments said the actions follow urgent need because three in 10 Malaysians live in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, which together account for 41.7% of national output.
